Food to prevent cancer: Nutrition is the foundation of a healthy life, and it could even protect against certain diseases. Recent studies support this thesis, particularly with regard to cancer.
Cancer: what you need to know
At the cellular level, all cancers are similar. But what makes cancer such a medical challenge is that it can grow in many places in your body, each based on different triggers and causes.
So, what does all this mean?
- The excess sun is the main cause of cellular damage leading to skin cancer, but its effect on the inside of the body is less.
- Your digestive system directly encounters many toxins and chemicals in foods that can end up causing cancer in the stomach, esophagus, intestines, but whose impact is only felt elsewhere in the body.
This means that there is no magic precaution against all forms of cancer. In addition, it is important to try several of the following suggestions. These are preventive measures that, according to recent studies, have really shown significant benefits.
1. Sip tea
Tea, not herbal tea, contains powerful antioxidants called catechins that protect proteins and cellular DNA from oxidative damage that can lead to cancer cells.
- Laboratory studies have shown that catechins prevent the growth of tumors and protect healthy cells.
- In other population studies, researchers have found that those who regularly drink tea cut their risk of some cancers by half compared to those who do not drink at all or drink infrequently.
2. Switch to olive oil
You probably knew the potential of this fat to fight heart disease, but did you know that it could also be useful against cancer?
- At the end of 2006, researchers from five European countries concluded that only olive oil can explain the significant difference in cancer rates between southern and northern Europeans.
- They followed a marker of oxidative damage in volunteers who consumed about 50 ml (1/4 cup) of olive oil a day for about three weeks. At the beginning of the trial, this marker was much more marked among Northern Europeans than among those in the South.
- At the end of the trial, however, the concentration of this marker among Northern Europeans had dropped considerably. The researchers do not yet know exactly which antioxidant compound would be responsible for this benefit, but that will not be long.
3. Take a good spoonful of tomato sauce
The anti-cancer properties of lycopene, an important antioxidant found in tomatoes, are no longer to be proven. It would take 10 tomatoes a week to reduce the risk of prostate cancer by 33% and breast cancer by 50%.
- To really make the most of it, eat your cooked tomatoes. It would be enough to gently cook a diced tomato to greatly increase the amount of lycopene released.
